I-69: Grant County Survey

Description

This fieldwork came on the heels of Lisa Gabbert’s 2004 Grant County fieldwork. Grant County also fits in the I-69 corridor survey. Though Gabbert emphasized some of the Afro-American traditional artistry in the county, this 2005 fieldwork concentrated more on the traditional forms of Hoosier artistry. Among these were cross-stitch quilters, potters, woodworkers, intarsia masters, woodcarvers, tatters, as well as winemakers and cider-makers. More unusual was the existence of a pork crackling maker who delighted in the aesthetics and furthering of this craft taught to him by his grandfather. There was also the community Saturday evening jam sessions and dance evenings in a local garage in Jimmy Dean’s home town of Fairmount. These are but a few of the local traditional events and arts that one can find in Grant County.
