Floyd County Survey

This collection features fieldwork materials created for Traditional Arts Indiana by Joseph O’Connell during the 2010-11 academic year and the summer of 2011. The materials assembled here include a fieldwork survey of Floyd County, Indiana, conducted in January and February of 2011. The survey is a broad study of contemporary cultural topics in the area, including music, food, craft, and custom. Some of the topics that TAI has highlighted related to this project are the St. Luke’s Sausage Supper in Jeffersonville; the F.O.S.S.I.L.S. home brewing club in New Albany; and banjoist Jim Smoak, from Pekin. In addition to the survey materials, this collection includes fieldwork from the Mexican-American Via Crucis observance in New Albany in 2011, TAI programming at the 2011 Indiana State Fair, and the 2011 Pekin 4th of July Celebration. Collection materials consist of still photographs, sound-recorded interviews, and sound-recorded music performances.
